A Dallas-based nonprofit, are dedicated stewards of the environment. Their hands-on initiatives extend beyond conventional gardening, integrating environmental science into their mission. From nurturing native plants to salvaging seeds, they embody a community-driven commitment to preserving the delicate balance of the Texas prairie.
In this photo, Max is deep into Friday morning work in the greenhouse, hands in a black pot, figuring out the optimal soil mix for native plants. Contrary to common perceptions, it's not just gardening; it's a blend of environmental science and climate activism. Each week, the team tirelessly propagate seeds, prep growing flats, and handle weeds.
In these two paper bags are seeds from Beck's, a wild site disappearing under urban sprawl. It's a tough fight against concrete, and these bags hold the endangered Dalia purpurea seeds – all they managed to salvage. Now, the team will grow and plant them in the flats, part of the ongoing battle to save what's left of the prairie.
Behind a simple fence, the team has got over five species of Texas grasses and a bunch of flowering plants growing. Adjusting their care based on the weather, they water the seedlings and keep a close eye. It's not just a duty for them; they're not selling the seeds. Instead, these plants will be used to fight off invasive species to regain the ecoystem, and to educate others.
